An Apple a Day…
Have you ever heard the expression “An Apple a day, keeps the doctor away?” More than just a cute English rhyme, there is something to be said about the benefits of apples.
Although no fruit or food in general possesses magical properties, it is true that some of them, in this case, apples, can be beneficial to our general health. They are what we call “super foods” in English. Generally speaking, these types of foods have lots of vitamins and proteins, are low in calories and easy to digest. Let us see how apple’s fit into this category!
-Apples have 5% protein content and are full of soluble fiber, which is indispensable to reduce intestinal disorders from diverticulitis to some types of cancer!
The fiber in apples helps to regulate the intestines if you suffer from constipation or diarrhea. So it can help to reduce intestinal inflammation in the case of those who suffer from irritable bowel syndrome. It also helps to relieve and prevent the development of hemorrhoids.
-Apples help to quench your thirst and hunger. They are very low in calories (Between 50 to 80 depending on the size). They contain no fat or sodium! Some studies show that including apples in your diet can help you lose weight. This makes them an ideal, healthy snack to eat for both children and adults.
-This fruit possesses a lot of variety! They are rich in vitamin C and A. These vitamins are found in the apple skin, which is why it is a good idea to eat them with the peel. Some years ago, my nutritionist recommended that I eat this fruit daily and at least one of them with the peel. This is because the larger part of the positive properties found in apples are in the skin, whether fiber, protein or vitamins! Try to buy organic fruit and if you are unable to do so, wash them very well before eating. I am giving you this tip because lots of fruits are sprayed with pesticides and other chemicals, which are harmful to your health!
– Apples also contain phosphorous, iron and calcium in small portions. They are also rich in potassium, which promotes heart health. The phenolic compound found in the apple peel prevents the hardening of cholesterol along the arterial walls. Once plaque accumulates in the arteries, it reduces the blood flow to the heart, which leads to coronary heart disease. It is also clear that apples help to reduce the negative cholesterol in the blood. Apple pectin is also great! It helps to reduce the levels of cholesterol by reducing the secretion of insulin, and helps with the formation of gallstones. A healthy weight is related to low levels of cholesterol, which can prevent the formation of stones!
-Apples are one of the fruits that help to clean your teeth. Of course, this does not replace dental hygiene, but it stimulates the production of saliva. This in turn reduces the production of bacteria, which causes cavities and other mouth diseases!
-Apples can also help on a neurological level. Although there are no conclusive studies on this subject with humans, there have been some studies done with mice. These studies have shown that apple juice fights against aging of the brain. Why? The fruit is full of antioxidants and the power of free radicals. For this reason, scientists consider apples as a possible source of disease prevention like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
An apple a day can help to keep your memory sharp! Quercetin, an antioxidant found mainly in the skin, has proven to be more effective than vitamin C in the protection of brain cells and from oxidative damage.
-Women who eat at least one apple a day have a 28% less probability to develop type 2 diabetes than those who do not eat them. Apples are loaded with soluble fiber, as I stated previously, which are fundamental to blunt blood sugar. This helps control the insulin levels by releasing sugar slowly into the bloodstream.
-The Quercetin found in apples can help to boost and strengthen the immune system, especially when undergoing stress!
-Apples clean and detoxify the liver and body in general, which helps to eliminate heavy metals like lead and mercury found in some foods.
-Based on Chinese medicine, apples can strengthen the heart, quench thirst, lubricate the lungs, lower mucus and increase bodily fluids. For this reason, they are considered as positive agents against respiratory diseases!
-Apples are also considered as preventive agents in the formation of kidney stones and skin illnesses.
With so much praise for apples, it’s worth trying them out! They are also delicious to eat. And you can find tons of recipes to make tasty drinks, pies, sauces and even salads!
So…tried an apple lately?
