Valentine’s Day 101
Valentine’s Day is the most romantic day of the year. This day is a special day to show your loved ones how much you love them. Make sure this Valentine’s Day you make your loved one feel special by getting the perfect gift in time.
Valentine’s Day is symbolized with heart shapes, doves and winged cupids, and it is associated with red, pink and white. Although Valentine’s Day is a day to celebrate love and affection for one another, its history on how it started is not very clear. It is said that in 270 A.D., Claudius II, a Roman emperor wanted to create a bigger Army but men who were married did not want to join the military because they didn’t want to leave their wife and children behind. Claudius created a law that men could no longer get married; he thought this would motivate men join his Army. A priest named Saint Valentine did not agree with the law and ended up marrying couples in secret. Claudius found out and sent St. Valentine to prison. In a strange turn of events, the priest fell in lovewith the daughter of Claudius who would visit him every day and provide him with food and water. Although the ending is not very happy – St. Valentine’s head was cut off! – but before he died, he left a note for his love signed “From your Valentine.” In 496 A.D. Pope Gelasius dedicated Feb. 14, to honor St. Valentine.
